Endodontics
What is endodontics?
Endodontics is what is known as "killing the nerve".
The importance of good practice
Endodontics consists of cleaning and disinfecting the canals that run along the root of the tooth.
Endodontics consists of cleaning and disinfecting the ducts that run along the root of the tooth, then filling them with a material that seals the ducts, preventing the passage of bacteria. It is necessary when the nerve has been exposed for any reason: caries (the most frequent), trauma, excessive wear...
It is performed by introducing a series of files of varying thickness that clean and shape the canal, which is then filled to seal it. It is generally performed in a single session: the tooth is root canalized and reconstructed in the same appointment. Sometimes this is not possible and we have to leave the tooth with a temporary filling until the next appointment (when there is an active infection, for example).
Objective of endodontics:
The main function of endodontics is to clean the canals where the nerves of the tooth are housed of bacteria, and subsequently achieve a three-dimensional sealing of these canals.
This is normal after root canal treatment:
- Have discomfort in the tooth and when chewing the first days. It can be avoided by taking soft foods and a common analgesic: Ibuprofen 600 mg or Enantyum 25mg, for example.
- Part of the temporary filling may fall out.
- Unpleasant tastes coming out of the tooth: they are part of the medication that we leave inside (sometimes).
- Swelling of the face in the area of the endodontic tooth, especially when there is a previous chronic infection in the endodontic tooth.
- That the tooth has slight mobility (greater than normal). This is due to inflammation of the ligament that joins it to the bone.
- It is possible, although not frequent, to cause great uncontrollable pain even with analgesics. And sometimes there may also be an exaggerated swelling of the area near the tooth, in which case antibiotic medication must be taken, always prescribed by your dentist.
